Chance The Rapper and Willow Smith Interview Each Other About Family, Creativity, and the Meaning of "Hustle"

Chance the Rapper and Willow Smith recently performed at an event put on by the Fader and Vitamin Water. They also sat down and interviewed each other. Their chat covered a variety of topics, including creativity, the relationship between brothers and sisters, the “you” in “universe”, and what the word “hustle” really means. Watch the interview below via the Fader.

At one point during the interview, Chance expresses his desire to join the Smith family, and asks Willow if she thinks Will Smith would adopt him. Her response? “If you really talked to him and were like, ‘Man, I just really want in the fam’, I really feel like he would.”

Later, Smith asks Chance if he ever wonders whether everything’s been done before. “You’re always going to have the same tools,” the rapper responds, “Primitive tools that people are going to touch and use to make different tonal sounds. That’s the hustle: You gotta try and flip stuff. Everything you get, you can turn into something else.”

Speaking of “hustle”, the two spend some time deciphering the term. Here’s Smith’s definition:

Hustle means, to me, that you have a goal, and you’re going to do whatever it takes to get to that goal. It’s not tunnel vision, ’cause you can see what’s going on around you, but you’re focused. You’re like ‘I’m getting this, and nothing’s going to stop me from getting what I need to get in my life.’
