#NYFW Spring 2016 Day 2 Recap: Fashion Déjà Vu

nyfw-day-2-recap Photo: AP/WENNDesigners took flashback Friday very seriously on day two of New York Fashion Week.

It seemed most designers were embracing the past with their latest collections, whether it was grabbing inspiration from years gone by or literally re-doing their favorite pieces from previous collections.

That was the case for Riccardo Tisci, who recreated haute couture gowns to celebrate 10 years at Givenchy, and his first show at NYFW. Along with making history and inviting over 1,000 public spectators, Tisci brought deja vu to the runway, but in a good way. From the lavender gown made famous by Zoe Saldana at the 2010 Academy Awards reimagined in black on Joan Smalls on the runway, to an shoulder baring, white studded gown we remember Anne Hathaway wearing to the “Les Miserables” London premiere, brought back to life in gold, Givenchy could be the show of the season.

And then there are those who gave us some bad deja vu, by creating a collection that we have seen before, not as homage but due to lack of creativity. Pamella Roland may have had one of the best venues, The Whitney Museum, but her collection was perfectly tailored yet but nothing worth remembering. Kate Spade New York also stuck to its preppy girl formula.

Other standouts from the day were Zimmerman, who went full flashback, as in Victorian era high ruffled necks and corset-like bodices, and Jason Wu, with his flirty and feminine spring collection.
