Remember when there was that hiccup with flights to Abu Dhabi? People went crazy copping tickets for damn near free-99. Now, what would you do if your favorite store suffered a similar accident? Would you return the merchandise you purchased or just say hell-to-the-nah?

According to BuzzFeed, a man has been asked by Bloomingdale’s to return a $10,000 pair of diamond earrings, a $5,000 watch and a Louis Vuitton bag he purchased with store credit gifted to him by the department store. A glitch occurred that handed the man, and some other customers, tens of thousands of dollars in credit they shouldn’t have received.

Members of Bloomingdale‘s loyalty program were sent emails last Friday of which apparently mistook their reward point balances for dollar amounts. So, this means that customers who had earned 10,000 “Loyalist” points under the program, which would normally equate to a $25 gift certificate, were granted $10,000 in credit. The man who bought the earrings ended up with a $25,000 store credit while others earned upwards of $10,000 by accident.

Local NBC channel 4 in New York City spoke with a Bloomingdale’s spokeswoman about the glitch. “A small subset of Bloomingdale’s Loyalist participants were accidentally issued rewards gift cards with amounts that were clearly incorrect,” the spokeswoman said in a statement. “The company caught the mistake last week and is re-issuing replacement gift cards with correct amounts. The company is in contact with its customers and has apologized to those affected.”

The man who bought the diamond earrings, expensive watch, and Louis Vuitton bag told BuzzFeed he was expecting a gift card but not in the amount of $25,000. When he went to the Midtown location to see if the credit was real, it turned out that it was and he walked out with $17,000 in merchandise. The next day, he received a call from the higher-ups at Bloomingdale’s saying that he needed to return the items, and that he’d get a $100 gift card if he brings the merchandise back.

What would you do in that situation?

The man has yet to make the returns, which proves that he is as smart of a hustler as he is a shopper. According to Bloomingdale’s terms and conditions, its loyalty program doesn’t indicate whether customers must return items bought because of a glitch.
