The 45th Annual NAACP Image Award Nominees Luncheon!- My Observations.

The NAACP Image Awards “celebrates the accomplishments of people of color in the fields of television, music, literature and film and also honors individuals or groups who promote social justice through creative endeavors.” On Saturday, I had the pleasure of attending the Nominees Luncheon which brings the nominees together for a little preliminary honoring and celebrating.  It was amazing.  Check out my observations below!

 1. Being in a room full of driven brown people is a powerful thing. Surrounding yourself with successful individuals is a prescription for success itself. Warning: May cause inspiration, difficulty giving up, and the inability to sleep until you’ve met your goals. May be taken with or without food.

2. Host, Roland Martin, was pretty much a party in a box. He was hilarious and the perfect man for the job.

that would be him on the floor!

3. Like me, the NAACP folks appreciate a good glass of champagne (or three). Good drinks flowed and good food was served.  Dr. Walton signed up for his membership immediately.  #YesPlease #AndThankYou

4. I received a certificate and got to walk across the stage like graduation, so I felt pretty darn special. I also got to serve face on the red carpet and that’s always fun.

5. I finally got to rock my obnoxious bow dress! I received a ton of compliments and Niecy Nash (who was killing it by the way) told me I got the award for best dressed.  Guillermo, aka Huck (who was gladiating by the way) also complimented my bow situation. I’m sure I blushed.

6. The homie Gabby Sidibe was in the house. I didn’t get a chance to say ‘hi’, but OMG, I love her. If you ever need serious entertainment, please follow her on twitter.

7. People who make music with only their mouths are amazing. Naturally7 slayed and I’ve pretty much downloaded all of their awesomeness.  You should too!

8. Two glasses of champagne will make you forget your shoes are a half size too small. #ToesNumbDontCare

9.  Along with Naturally7, sisters Chloe and Halle Bailey (15 and 13 years old!) performed Pretty Hurts and I ugly cried.  I know I’m late, but I had never heard of them before.  Their presence, their voices, their amazing parents… they’re set up for the win!  Interview to come.

10. It never takes long when I’m at events like these to remember that if it wasn’t for the CN community I wouldn’t be here.  Today, there aren’t too many places you can go without seeing a natural head and this luncheon was no different. It was amazing to see the influence we have had on the world. We’re all role modeling natural hair for women of color and we’re officially in the building.
Later Gators,
Nik

p.s. It was totally worth the trip out to Los Angeles and being based out of St. Louis for the rest of the month (without Hubby) so that I have a Boogie-sitter when I have to go back out to LA later in the month.
