13 People Gunned Down in Park on Chicago’s South Side

Thirteen people, including a three-year-old boy, were injured Thursday night when gunmen opened fire on people in Cornell Square Park, located in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood. Three people were in critical condition, including the toddler.

A witness reports seeing dreadlocked men in a gray sedan open fire from their vehicle before turning toward the park and continuing to shoot random people in the park.

“They hit the light pole next to me, but I ducked down and ran into the house,” Julian Harris, 22, told the Chicago Sun-Times. “They’ve been coming ‘round here looking for people to shoot every night — just gangbanging stuff. It’s what they do.”

Eleven people were taken transported to the hospital in ambulances while another person drove himself, according to the Chicago Tribune. The wounded included one child, two teens, and 10 adults.

The three-year-old boy was shot in the face and is in critical condition, along with two others, Chicago Fire Department officials report. On Friday morning, the Chicago Police Superintendent said that all injuries were now considered non-life threatening.

Law enforcement believe the attack was gang-related, but have yet to make any arrests.

The FBI reports that Chicago had 500 homicides in 2012 — more than any other city in the country.
