Chris "Birdman" Andersen Caught Up in Insane Catfishing Scheme

Miami Heat baller Chris “Birdman” Andersen was caught up in one of the most elaborate catfishing schemes that almost had him sent to jail. His attorney revealed on Thursday that he would not be facing charges in a child pornography investigation after authorities confirmed that he was being used in an elaborate internet hoax.

He became the target of a double catfishing scheme when a woman from Canada named Shelly Chartier acted as the then-Denver Nuggets player. She posed as the basketball star to talk to underage women, and in the process orchestrated a meeting between him and a 17-year-old girl from California.

Andersen and the teen had consensual sex in his Colorado home, where the age of consent is 17, and she became upset when he became disinterested in keeping up the relationship. The teen called authorities after the Canadian hoax person contacted her posing as Anderson, and threatening to release nude photos of her.

At the same time, Anderson was sent a demand by the teen’s family, asking for money, which was again found to be Shelly Chartier.

Birdman was never charged in the incident, but was let go from the Nuggets before getting signed to the Heat, who commented on the recent events.

“We are not surprised that this is the end result,” the Heat said in a statement. “We are happy for Chris and glad this unfortunate incident is behind him.  It had an extraordinary effect upon Chris. To this day, Chris is so disturbed because some of the public opinion was just brutal.”
