Federal Government Shuts Down Over "Obamacare" Disagreements (@BarackObama @MichelleObama)

President Barack Obama’s efforts to bring his health care bill, the Affordable Care Act, or “Obamacare,” to the homes of millions of Americans who are currently uninsured has created a great rift between Democrats and Republicans, with the result being a shutdown of the Federal Government. This is the first shutdown in 17 years, and it couldn’t have come at a worse time.

The United States has been on a long road towards stabilizing the economy, and this shutdown will only disrupt the incomes and lives of millions of hard working Americans with federally funded jobs.  The announcement was made during the late hours of Monday night, September 30th, stretching into the early hours of Tuesday morning, October 1st, after the Republican-run House and Democrat-run Senate failed to come to an agreement on the bill.

The shutdown will unfortunately force around 800,000 federal workers to stay home without work today, Tuesday, October 1st, and also cause various difficulties for millions of others who depend on federal services in order to maintain a fairly comfortable living situation.  On the flip-side, some workers, such as Border Patrol or air traffic controllers who perform crucial jobs, will have to work for free, as they are still going to have to do their regular duties, only without the compensation of payment that they deserve.  Congress will not be sweating this at all when it comes to pay cuts, because thanks to the 27th Amendment to the Constitution, their salaries are safe from federal shutdowns.  This includes President Barack Obama.

Obama is understandably extremely upset with the Republican party’s unwillingness to cooperate with him and accept his healthcare reform, and he’s put them under the spotlight as being responsible for the unfortunate shutdown.

“One faction of one party in one house of Congress in one branch of government doesn’t get to shut down the entire government just to refight the results of an election,” stated Obama.  You don’t get to extract a ransom for doing your job, for doing what you’re supposed to be doing anyway, or just because there’s a law there that you don’t like.”

Obama believes this situation was “entirely preventable” and that the Republican party has just thrown “a wrench into the gears” hindering the economic recovery of the United States.

Despite the shutdown, Obama is moving forward with his mission to provide affordable health care to millions, and posted several tweets about the situation following the shutdown.  Check out his tweets above.

How do you feel about the government shut down?
