May officially kicks off rosé season!

The wine that derives its color from grape skins, but isn’t a true red wine, is a popular spring/summer drink because of its light nature. Often sparkling, our favorite rosé’s are sweet to taste.

Rosé is a big business, and the most popular brands are king. Especially in New York.

One of the most sought after rosés comes from Wölffer, a family-run company based in the Hamptons. Their rosé table wine is produced and bottled in Sagaponack, New York. Fruity to taste, the wine has aromas of ripe fresh fruit—cantaloupes, pears and peach. And the most fashionable part of the drink, is its beautiful design— the changes summer-after-summer.

To learn more about Wölffer’s rosé and bottle design read our interview below.

1. How did you start working with Wolffer? What makes them such a unique brand?
John Gilsenan, IWANT Design: “Joey was in London, in the early part of 2013, meeting designers to work on their new product, No. 139 Dry Cider. A friend had recommended us, Joey called up and we met for a drink in Shoreditch and had an instant rapport. If I remember correctly Joey then called us the next day to say we had the work. It all went amazingly well and we have worked with the Wölffer brand since.

There’s so much that makes unique, from the beautiful location to Roman Roth’s genius to the team behind the curtain making the magic happen. Then there’s Joey, a tour de force of an entrepreneur, who knows exactly what she wants to achieve but is able to give you the space and freedom to work. Wölffer also had that unique ingredient creatives wished every client possessed they listen, if we have ideas and they aren’t sure, they will listen to the rationale behind the concept before slamming the door, they are open to ideas and looking to push their boundaries. It is an absolute joy working with Wölffer I feel very lucky they dialed our number.”

2. What was the process of creating this floral design? What did you hope to convey?
John: “The bottle came from an ad campaign for Wölffer’s existing Rosé. We were asked to capture “Summer in a Bottle” in image form as Rosé week was coming around. Having already researched Wölffer and the Hamptons for No. 139 Cider, we knew we wanted to capture a similar feeling, the feeling you can only have on a beautiful summer’s day by the sea, the smell of fresh flowers, the sense that you’ve left everything behind and all that matters is that perfect moment. We created the ad and it was a big success. Max called up and said ‘We’ve decided to make this bottle a reality.’ We spent a long time trying to get it right and we did, and it does everything we wanted it do – it really is Summer in a Bottle.”

Joey Wölffer, Co-Owner of Wölffer Estate Vineyard: “We’d been successful already when my brother and I took over the business after our father passed away. But what we’d been missing from our branding was being able to capture the spirit of a Hamptons brand. We wanted to get back to the roots of our own Hamptons experience.

I thought back to the bohemian lifestyle of the ‘70s and ‘80s when my parents were living here and driving a VW van amidst Mercedes and BMWs. There was a huge art community out here.

It was important to get back to our roots. That’s what inspired the playful, floral, colorful Summer in a Bottle. That thinking also inspired what makes the Wine Stand so successful. Where else in the Hamptons can you put out a blanket with all your friends and family and enjoy wine and food with live music in such a relaxed but playful environment?”

3. Do fashion and spirits have a connection?
Joey: “What inspires our thinking for the winery definitely extends to The Styleliner. The vibe of my collection and handbags has the same spirit. Capturing the mixing of prints is a natural extension of that Hamptons bohemia.”

4. Who is the ideal Wölffer Rosé customer?
Joey: “The beauty of Wölffer is that we are accessible to everybody. You can enjoy our Rosé wine no matter your gender or age because it evokes such a great sense of summer and what makes a Hamptons summer so special.”

5. Will there be a new bottle design each year?
Joey: “Part of the beauty of the brand is that we beat to our own drum. We’re not followers. So we’ll definitely look to keep things fresh and experiment down the road with the design.”
