Hold up. Before you decide to pick up your next birth control prescription, or worse, go another month without it— read this.

Historically many of us have assumed that “the pill” improves acne but in fact, some forms of birth control help, and others actually worsen breakouts. A new study from Curology analyzed 2,147 women, ages 15 to 51 with the average being 24.9 years, who were utilizing a hormonal contraceptive at the time of their initial acne consultation.

The results were eye-opening, to say the least.

Shown in the chart below, three different oral contraceptives improve acne with two types of subdermal implants making acne worse.

What was also interesting was that 57 percent of the women studied prefer the use of oral contraceptives for birth control. Overall, 67 percent of the women ages 25-34 years old were using contraceptives. And 26 percent of those taking hormonal IUDs felt like it made their skin worse.

“I recommend a woman first do her research on birth control to establish her top few choices,” said Dr. David Lortscher, the board certified dermatologist, founder of Curology, and lead author in the study. “At that point she’ll be prepared to make a decision together with her doctor on what’s the best option for her.”

Ultimately every woman is different, and a dermatologist and gynecologist will be the best sources for birth control guidance. But this study is illuminating to say the least.
