Missouri’s Micahel Sam, Comes Out Of The Closet Before NFL Draft
Michael Sam , a defensive end from the University of Missouri, has taken a bold move by openly announcing that he’s gay right before the NFL Draft. The young players admits that he wanted to make the announcement on his own terms, which means he didn’t want to give anyone the power to try and leak his private information, for malicious reasons:
I didn’t realize how many people actually knew, and I was afraid that someone would tell or leak something out about me. I want to own my truth. .?.?. No one else should tell my story but me.
Wish more athletes would feel the same way, instead of living double lives. His teammates are well aware that Sam is gay; he came out to them last year after the coach asked each teammate to reveal something personal about themselves. Funny thing is, his teammates already knew:
I looked in their eyes, and they just started shaking their heads — like, finally, he came out.
If all goes well, which it is expected after Missouri’s great season, Michael Sam may become the first “openly gay” person drafted and actively playing in the NFL. Notice I said “openly gay” because there are many players who are gay in the NFL, they’re just not out of the closet, publicly. There are a few athletes who came out after they retired, but that’s not quite the same thing. I will be glad when we get to the point where this isn’t even news.
