Truth be told, not many of us are trying to pay double digits for an umbrella.

Of course, they’re the one item that comes in clutch when it starts pouring. But the thought of spending money on something that you don’t use on a regular basis and can easily break, sucks. If you’re like us, you’re trying to spend as little as possible on the most reliable umbrella.

So, to make life easier, we did a little research. We found out that with umbrellas, you get what you pay for, but you can always find a deal. The more high-end expensive umbrellas by Burberry, London Fog, and Barneys tend to have large canopies and a comfortable handle.

For those of you who are willing to spend more, but want to know what to look for before dropping the big bucks, look for:
1. An umbrella that retracts once. The more places it retracts, the more susceptible it is to break.
2. A comfortable handle, even if it’s wood.
3. A vented or two-layer fabric canopy that’s at least 10 inches wide. The two layers allow for wind to go through without flipping the umbrella inside out.
4. An umbrella brand with positive reviews. Do your research!

But that’s not to take away from the two brands we tested out and liked, which were totes and Weatherproof. In terms of ease of retraction, handle comfort and strength of shaft, totes was the stronger brand. But they’re both good options, that can be found at Marshalls and T.J. Maxx for $9.99.
