Will Smith’s “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” Lyric is Mistaken for a Shooting Threat

Who knew that one of Will Smith’s biggest hits was ‘hardcore’ enough to trigger a school lockdown?

On February 28, Pennsylvania schools went into a lockdown for about 20 minutes after a lyric from Fresh Prince was mistaken for a threat about “shooting some PEOPLE outside of the school.” The actual lyric goes “shooting some B-BALL outside of the school.”

Now, this is the story all about how a life in Beaver County “got flipped, turned upside down.”

It all started when a receptionist called the 19-year-old Travis Clawson to remind him of his appointment at the optometrist. The Ambridge Area High School student wasn’t able to pick up the phone, so the call was directed to a voicemail. Upon hearing the rap, the receptionist quickly called Sewickley police. This prompted the schools to commence lockdown procedures.

Police found Clawson in the school guidance counselor’s office and took him into custody to be questioned. Upon further investigation, District Attorney Anthony Berosh confirmed that the 19-year old student wasn’t plotting a mass shooting and was just rapping the intro to the hit ‘90s sitcom, so they released him.

Ambridge Area Superintendent Erv Weischedel gave a positive note about the situation, stating:

“It gave us a wonderful chance to review our emergency procedures. It was a good drill that went very, very well.”
