In honor of Black History Month, we’re highlighting the black designers who are currently making big moves in the industry. Though there are few, their work has crossed boundaries and their names are rising in the ranks despite the unfavorable odds for people of color in fashion.

Here are  11 current black designers you should know!

Olivier Rousteing for Balmain

Olivier Rousteing proves that persistence is key in getting where you want. At the age of 18, he moved to Rome after dropping out of law school and eventually started working with Roberto Cavalli where he stayed for five years. He admired then-Creative Director of Balmain, Christophe Decarnin, and wrote a letter to him expressing his admiration for Decarnin’s work. Decarnin ended up hiring Rousteing as an assistant and at the age of 25, Rousteing was promoted to Creative Director.
