It began with an office discussion about Baby Phat and Kimora Lee Simmons’s transition from designing clothing. If you couldn’t tell by now, the majority of our editorial staff are 80s babies, so fashion –among many things– is something we can all relate to.

Naturally, the discussion ventured into our favorite clothing brands of the past. Shouting out everything from Akademics to Seven for all Mankind, we quickly realized that many of these brands we used save up for (or beg our parents) failed to have longevity. And then the hard truth hit us.

Fast fashion killed aspirational shopping.

We’ve talked about this on StyleBlazer before, but it held especially true when thinking of the dozen of brands that we no longer covet. For the average American teen these days, the items they buy are no longer unattainable. And with the popularity of vintage shopping, they have more outlets to express their individuality.

No longer do pre-teens save allowance for months to buy a $60 pair of House of Dereon jeans. They simply go to H&M and buy the $9.99 ones Miranda Kerr is modeling. The world has indefinitely changed and retailers are well aware of this.

So in honor of our teenage years, we’re showing you ads from the hottest brands of yester-year. Look back, reflect with us and add any others we’ve left out.
