5 Style Lessons We’ve Learned from Louise Roe

In addition to being one of the chicest people we know (have you seen her Instagram feed?), Louise Roe also happens to be one of the nicest and most charming. So we couldn’t wait to get our hands on her new book, Front Roe: How to Be the Leading Lady in Your Own Life, which is filled with all of her best tips and tricks on everything from discovering your personal style without spending a ton of cash to eating healthy and decorating your home. After reading it cover to cover, we came away with a ton of great advice (plus an adorable new term, “bezzie mates,” which means besties in Roe-speak). Below, a few of our favorite highlights.

Tighter is sometimes better. The perfect jeans for you are the ones that are “a bit of a struggle” to get on. According to Roe, “if they go on too fast, they’re probably too loose.” And she offers up this simple test for determining the correct fit: “If you can fit two fingers down the back: perfect. If you can fit a whole hand: go down a size.”

Pack three tops for every bottom. Those six words are a game changer for anyone who’s ever broken a sweat trying to pack for a trip. As Roe explains, “Generally bottoms take up more space, and jeans, formal trousers, or shorts can be recycled into very different looks just by switching your top half.” She also recommends packing whatever you’ll want to wear first at the top so you don’t have to dig through your suitcase when you arrive. So simple, yet so genius.

Follow the two week rule. In a section on shopping smart, Roe suggests hanging any new purchase at the front of your closet with the tags still attached and the receipt taped to the hanger. Only remove the tag when you’re heading out the door wearing the item. If you haven’t put it on after two weeks of buying it, return it.

Wash your face twice. Roe swears by “double cleansing” which she claims prevents breakouts. Every night she wets her skin with warm water and massages in a cleanser to remove makeup, dirt and sweat. She rinses then applies a little more cleanser and uses a damp wash cloth to buff her skin in circular motions (this decongests the T-zone, she says). Next, she splashes her face at least four times with fresh water to ensure there’s absolutely no cleanser left behind.

Get stylish with storage. Like most of us, Roe says her home lacks closet space. She gets around this by using everything from wicker baskets and vintage suitcases to trays and even an old picnic basket to contain clutter.
