We thought we had figured Solange Knowles out. After a decade in the music business, the singer has transformed as people naturally do– but her demeanor is more settled than your average 27. It figures. After a marriage and divorce before the age of 21, one would expect it.

In her latest interview with Harper’s Bazaar, the singer talks about what’s going on in her life now and what she’s learned from the past. For the shoot done by Julia Noni, Knowles sports her favorite brands Marni, Manolo Blahnik and Moshino with classics Chanel and Ralph Lauren. And some of the information she divulges is news to us.

Five things to be specific:

1. Her parents didn’t assume she wanted to be an entertainer just because her sister was: “My parents constantly tried to talk me out of being an artist. They had gone through the whole journey with my sister and just wanted me to have a normal teenage life.”
2. She stands behind her early albums: “I still stand behind the stuff I did early on, but I was on a record label and I didn’t have a lot of creative control. Another side of that is just being young and having bad taste. There was plenty of that too.”
3. Her son, Juelz was her closest companion in her late teens: “I was lucky with Julez. I was completely lost when we moved to Idaho, out in the country, and I devoted everything to him. In a lot of ways, emotionally and mentally, I feel far older than 27.”
4. She has always been an adventurous dresser: “I have always been drawn to interesting pieces and colors, but I didn’t quite know how to limit myself and make those statement pieces work.”
5. She doesn’t totally love the term ‘tastemaker’: “I’ve always had an annoying relationship with the term ‘tastemaker,’ but it’s been a defining part of my career for the past couple of years.”
