The fashion and cultural worlds have lost one of its most notable journalists with the death of Ingrid Sischy, former editor-in-chief of Interview. Her passing on Friday, at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, was from breast cancer at the age of 63.

For 40 years, the writer and editor had a critical eye throughout the fashion, art and photography worlds. Her associations with names like The New Yorker, Vanity Fair and Conde Nast were ones that created a long-spanning profession, celebrated and admired by everyone in the industry. Known for her witty style, Sischy was an influencer of the avant-garde world – becoming a popular face at fashion shows, gallery openings and many other cutting edge events throughout the creative market.

The Johannesburg-born writer graduated Sarah Lawrence College, followed by earning a PhD in humanities from Moore College of Art in 1987. Her career took her from participating in a curatorial internship for John Szarkowski, to penning some of the most intriguing stories that exposed nothing less than the truth and snagging the title to many fashion firsts. Who doesn’t remember her sit down with John Galliano after he was dropped by Dior?

Sischy’s presence throughout the artistic industry is one that’ll always be missed. She occupied a void where visual art and culture intersected, and for that, her name will forever represent a dynamic force.
