After Much Ado, ‘Lucky’ Magazine Finally Shutters Print

The relationship between The Lucky Group and their print side has been more tumultuous than Chris Brown and Karrauche Tran. In a swift and immediate move, the company announced today that it will be shuttering its print side for good and will continue in digital form.

While there was no comment from the Condé Nast created brand, they did lay off the remaining members of their editorial team today. In April, most notably, famed editor in chief Eva Chen left the floundering brand after two years and an “intensely personal/difficult” decision process.

Lucky magazine’s ad pages were also seeing a slow decline as of 2014.

As reported by WWD:

The shift in Lucky’s strategy ended in the departure of editor in chief Eva Chen, who resigned in April. Shortly after, Lucky indicated that it would reduce its frequency to quarterly from 10 times a year, focusing on improved print paper stock. Lucky said it was also in the process of courting investors. Layoffs ensued—about 14—including the dismissal of publisher Gillian Gorman Round. Recent news reports indicated that Lucky Group was going to shutter, after an investor pulled out of talks. Although a key investor did pull out, three others are still in talks with Lucky, a source with knowledge of the situation told WWD. Staffers are to learn more about the state of the company at a meeting later today.

The sad news comes months after merging Lucky magazine with e-commerce platform BeachMint. The company will be providing commerce operations, customer service and technology.

“BeachMint has spent the last few years developing a technology platform, growing digital audiences and scaling our commerce operations,” says Josh Berman as CEO. “Lucky magazine is about shopping. It references hundreds of brands in every issue and is already responsible for thousands of purchases every day.”
