Allison Williams Wanted a Wedding Gown With Sleeves Because ‘I’m Always Cold!’

Allison Williams looked like modern Hollywood royalty in her couture Oscar de la Renta wedding gown for her September 19th nuptials to CollegeHumor founder Ricky Van Veen, 34. And as it turns out, that connection might have been just a little intentional.

Her elegant silk-satin ball gown with sheer neckline and hand embroidery featured long sleeves, similar to Princess Kate’s Alexander McQueen gown, and she told People that Kate’s gown was a favorite of hers from the beginning. “Who didn’t look at Kate Middleton and Pippa’s dresses — Kate’s in particular, because it was actually bridal — and think, Well, that’s just perfection!” she said at the Forevermark “A Diamond Is Forever” celebration in N.Y.C. Wednesday, where she gave us another look at her brand-new wedding band.

But in the end, the aethestic was 100 percent her own, inspired by the surroundings at her Saratoga, Wyoming wedding at the picturesque Brush Creek Ranch.

Williams, 27, selected Oscar de la Renta creative director Peter Copping to design her gown for her big day because the designer and his team “totally got me,” Williams said. “Peter grew up around horses and ranches and he immediately understood the aesthetic I was going to be in.”

And those elegant lace sleeves may not have been as much of a conscious fashion choice as an attempt at comfort. The only thing she knew going into dress shopping was that she wanted a long-sleeved dress: “I’m always cold!”

Despite the star-studded guest list and Tom Hanks serving as officiant, Williams says the best part of her wedding was how personal and private it turned out. “There was no sense of needing to put on a certain façade,” she said. “[I wanted it] to be really intimate and feel like an experience we shared as a family with our close friends … It was exactly that.”

After tying the knot the newlyweds jetted off to the Amalfi Coast for a “heavenly” honeymoon, and Williams will return to Season 5 of HBO’s Girls on February 21, 2016. (But in the meantime, she couldn’t resist trying a few more diamonds on at the event … a first anniversary gift, maybe?)
