Amandla Stenberg Blasts Kylie Jenner For Appropriating Black Culture

Being a Kardashian or Jenner means dealing with a lot of rhetoric and commentary from the Peanut Gallery, but in this case, the one throwing the stones had a definite point.

The 17-year-old fashion talent, Kylie Jenner, was brought into a feud after Hunger Games star Amandla Stenberg, 16, called her out for appropriating African American culture. As you can see in the photo above, the Keeping Up With The Kardashian’s star was captured sporting some cornrows, a hairstyle that has direct ties to African and African American culture. Tyga’s boo-thang caught a lot of heat from the public, but the voice of outspoken actress Amandla Stenberg comes with some extra fire.

While Kylie feels that the attach was “unprovoked”, saying “I woke up like disss” isn’t the best way to disprove that you’re not misappropriating black culture. Stenberg, who left her comment directly on Kylie’s Instagram page, unsettled the reality TV performer who believes that Amandla’s attack stems from “Jaden [Smith] turning her [Amandla] against her [Kylie].” The first person from the Kardashian clan to speak out on Caitlyn Jenner had enough words to reply to the Disney actress, saying, “Mad if I do… mad if I don’t. Go hang with Jaden or something.”

Stenberg and the new Fresh Prince went to prom together in the spring. Putting Jaden in the center of a cat fight may not be how he wants to spend his time, but when you are attempting to profit off of a culture that you’re not a part of (the link in Kylie’s Instagram profile directs users to her signature wig brand) — he may have to speak on it to get tensions to subside.

100k-plus comments on the photo alone make it hard to determine whether or not Amandla started the discussion about race and appropriation, it is telling that Jenner would ignore the point and shift the attention to something as petty as who is dating who. Proof is if Kylie Jenner is too invested in syphoning up as much blackness as possible without giving back or offering any concern, she might find herself receiving backlash from more than just a House of Mouse performer.

If any of this sounds or reads familiar, it is because Amandla has lashed out before in a video titled “Don’t Cash Crop My Cornrows”. She blasted pop stars such as Katy Perry, Christina Aguilera, Madonna, Fergie, as well as Kendall Jenner and Kim Kardashian in the lengthy video. “What would America be like if we loved black people as much as we loved black culture?” she asked, ending the piece with a timely and significant question. As Amandla Stenberg defends black culture, the rest of the media world focuses on Jaden “being caught in the crossfire,” which posits us to believe that yet again people are missing the point.

Stenberg should continue to speak up and out about cultural appropriation, which she did through her own Instagram page.

As long as Kylie Jenner and her ilk remain profiteers of black culture, while being silent about their crucifixion, people like Amandla Stenberg will continue to put their feet to the fire!
