An Editor Tries A Spring 2015 Hairstyle Right Off The Runway

If you were to compare a designer’s runway show to a song, the collection would be both the verse and chorus, while the hair and makeup is the bridge, or section which connects the two. Naturally the fashion trends that emerge each season are key, however the beauty trends come in at a close second. For the spring 2015 season, there was one particular designer’s collection that struck a chord with me from head to toe. “Inspired by Jazz-age muse, heiress and political activist, Nancy Cunard”, Bibhu Mohapatra’s Spring 2015 collection embodied the theme of women who set and play by their own set of rules. Cunard’s independent spirit and innovative style was embodied in the opulent fabrics, prints and palette throughout the elegant yet modern-chic collection.

“I drew inspiration from a strong, controversial woman and wanted the hair to compliment her rule-breaking style,” says designer Mohapatra, who worked closely with long time collaborator and L’Oreal Professionnel Artist Amit Abraham to create the hairstyles to complement the collection. “The play on textures and the variations of braids and chignons embrace Nancy Cunard’s far-reaching influences, ranging from Africa to 1920s Paris,” commented Abraham. “Tribal braids are coupled with a lady-like chignon and a braided crown to create a modern iconoclastic look.”

After being left in complete awe by both the collection and hair, I had the pleasure of having Abraham himself recreate the avant-garde hairstyle on me! See my final look below:

To get a similar version at home, here are Abraham’s DIY hair tips:
•  Prime hair with NEW L’Oréal Professionnel Mythic Oil Sève Protectrice (SRP $32.00/5 fl. oz.) and divide hair into two sections, one on top of the other. The top section is held loose at the apex and bottom is slicked into a ponytail at the occipital bone.
•  Center part top section and create two small French braids, secure and wrap ends around ponytail underneath.
•  Apply L’Oréal Professionnel True Grip Texturizing Powder (SRP $17.00/.25 oz.) to ponytail and split into two sections. Braid the left side and secure with elastic. Lightly backcomb the right side and secure end with elastic.
•  Wrap braided and backcombed sections together to create a voluminous chignon. Finish by spraying with L’Oréal Professionnel Perfect Shimmer (SRP $23.00/5.8oz) and L’Oréal Professionnel Infinium 3 (SRP $25.00/11oz) for shine and hold. Use NEW L’Oréal Professionnel Homme Poker Paste (SRP $18.50/2.6 fl. oz.) to smooth flyaways.
