The first official Men’s New York Fashion Week had mixed reviews from the pundits-that-be, but one thing was impressive: Kris Gottschalk.

While it is too early to tell whether the week will generate sales for menswear buyers, the Elite Models NYC signee was the only female in the lineup at the Public School show, as well as posing up fiercely at Theory’s menswear presentation.

Kris is the latest model following the wave of gender barriers being broken across the nation. In the modeling industry, Gottschalk’s edgy, closely cropped hair ensures that she stands out from an otherwise all-male lineup. While it logically makes sense for her to walk the shows, it’s quite the anomaly in a gender based seasonal time table. Gottschalk could essentially walk any and every show all year.

Kris’ modeling career was not built on gender fluidity alone. Her captivating look came as a result of a nasty motorcycle accident that found her shaving her hair. “I was blond and more commercial [in my early career],” Kris told Style.com when asked why she buzzed her hair. “I took a little break and went away and did some traveling. Having a shaved head changes the way people perceive me. It’s opened me up to new kinds of work, edgier clients.”

Feeling more comfortable in her skin, the move changed the way the fashion industry perceived her. “I always gravitated toward clothing that was boyish and a little rock ‘n’ roll, and now I’m being seen by those clients,” she told Style.com. As the actual shows left something to be desired, Gottschalk’s looks for Garcia Velez was great to blur the lines of fashion.

Her short haircut placed her amongst the likes of Garcia Velez, Theory and Public School who all booked her during the week. We will definitely keep her on our radar for upcoming Fashion Month.
