Being A Rihanna Fan May Be The Reason You Won’t Find A Husband

If you thought Rihanna’s “reign” wasn’t going to let up in the world of pop stars and rappers, you may be surprised to learn that being a Rihanna fan may hurt your chances of marriage, or, as it was put by a certain Twitter user, “wifey” material.

At least that is what Melissa Sherman, a writer for online website For Harriet, found while scrolling through her timeline post-Rihanna naked-and-not-a-care-to-give at the CFDA Awards. She stumbled on a tweet of a young man who simply said, ““She not wifey material if she look up to Rihanna.”

What most of us understand, including Sherman, is that Rihanna is a woman who is unashamed and proud of her body, she speaks her mind (although sometimes it may be misguided), and she certainly doesn’t apologize for being a woman. While some (*ahem* men) may see looking up to her as a sign of not being “wifey” material, we all know that your preference for who you decide to stan over does not ultimately dictate who you are or what you may be like within a marital union.

The piece speaks to the larger question that asks: who defines womanhood in America? While Rihanna may not fit the typical “housewife” stereotype, if her actions empower women to be their true selves then who wouldn’t view that as a good thing?

While Melissa asks herself, ““I’ve wondered what it means to be a good wife, what it means to be a good husband. What does it look like to love and to cherish? Do I have to stifle myself to be loved? Can’t I be me and love my womanhood without threatening my mate’s manhood?” The answer is complicated but trust us when we say Rihanna will have nothing to do with it.
