Carolina Herrera Was Not Impressed By Beyonce’s Sheer Dress

Carolina Herrera was not holding back when it came to her thoughts on today’s fashion trends.

The designer, known for her classic and sophisticated designs, opened up to the Washington Post about everything from her friendship to Oscar de la Renta to her design principles to Beyonce’s sheer dress at the Met Gala.

Herrera who is a red carpet staple despite the fact that her designs have not wavered since her debut more than 30 years ago, proves you don’t have to be “hip or cool” to make great clothes. She actually prides herself on not trying to be hip or cool.

“If you are a designer who is born hip and cool, then fine, you can do it. But I don’t understand a designer who sees hip and cool [young designers] and they want to be like the newcomers. You confuse the client,” Herrera said.

Along with her must-have fashion staples (an evening gown, pencil skirt and dress), Herrera proves that fashion, when done right, never goes out of style.

On the sheer dress trend: “The almost naked! Oh God! They’re trying to get people to pay attention to them. In life, there should be a little mystery. They’re supposed to be fashion icons and they’re not wearing anything. It’s an obsession now.”

On her long-time relationship with Renee Zellweger: “It was lovely, uncomplicated and easy. Personal.”

On what fashion means to her: “For me, fashion is about originality, sophistication and beauty. I’m not in the fashion business; I’m in the beauty business. You can’t always please the press. That’s for your ego.”
