Cher Is Marc Jacobs’s Latest Model

We should have known that Marc Jacobs had grand plans for Cher when we saw him squiring her to the Met Gala earlier this month. After all, this is the designer who has tapped Jessica Lange for a beauty campaign, and who said about dressing his Met Gala date, “This has been a dream of mine for a very, very long time.” So the big reveal of his latest ad campaign, which stars the 69-year-old singer, was less of a surprise and more of a “Wow” moment.

“The amazing and beautiful CHER! Photographed by David Sims for our Fall/Winter campaign.. This is just the beginning…. More to come!!” Jacobs wrote to accompany the Instagram image. And in the New York Times article about the duo’s Met Gala moment, it’s apparent that Cher has been a muse for Jacobs long before she was a model.

“Other boys were out fascinated by other things. I was like, No, I’d really much rather see what Cher’s wearing this week,” Jacobs told the reporter. Later, he said to his date, “I’m getting this whole romantic vision of what it must have been like to be Sonny standing next to you, once upon a time — the short guy, you know.”

Jacobs was among the first to kick off the trend of hiring 50+ models (often iconic women including Twiggy, Lange and Joan Didion), but he got a two-for-one in Cher, as she can sing too. Can we expect a TV spot with reworked lyrics to “If I Could Turn Back Time?” We’ve reached out to Marc Jacobs’s camp for info and will keep you posted.
