If you’re a true natural, then you know taking care of your tresses goes beyond achieving long coils and fluffy manes!

Long before “going natural” was a trend, there was a pioneering group who mastered natural hair maintenance . We’re talking about the StyleBlazers rocking dreadlocks.

Just like their curly haired allies, locs come in many different forms, with varying strand types and needs.

This week, we’re dishing tips and tricks for maintaining fabulous locs all summer long, no matter the length or lifestyle.

1. Maintenance & Up-Do’s

Those in the beginning stages of their locs journey should consult a professional loctician their first couple go-rounds with updating styles. Try to get into a chair at least every 2 months or when you feel your roots look like complete frizz balls. This ensures that you aren’t over twisting the hair closest to your scalp.

Up-do’s, especially in the summer, are great for your locs. You can try this in different variations and patterns to get the desired look.

2. Trim The Fuzzies Around Your Locs

If you’ve noticed that your locs seem a little frizzy, give them a little trim like you would with separated strands. Use your sheers, hold your loc outward where you have the most light to see each strand and clip lightly along the tops wherever you see scraggly hairs. This quick trim will make your locs appear more neat and symmetrical.

Talk Tip: Clipping techniques should only be utilized by those StyleBlazers whose hair is already fully locked. When you are just beginning your locs, hair is softer, so you don’t want to mistakenly nip a hair you will need later on.
