Duck Dynasty’s Sadie Robertson Models Jeans (You’ve Got to Try Her Secret for the Perfect Fit)

Anyone who grows up making duck whistles in rural Louisiana should know a thing or two about great jeans. And someone who’s hit the runway for New York Fashion Week would know a thing or two about modeling them. Sadie Robertson is just that person — which is why Wild Blue Denim tapped her for their holiday and spring ad campaigns. Now she’s telling us what makes a pair of jeans perfect (both on her and her guy!).

When we asked Robertson what her worst denim disaster was, we imagined a pair of embarrassing low-riders or cuffed flares, like the rest of us. But we should have known that things are a little different around the Duck Dynasty households. “My denim disaster actually turned into me being very thankful for denim!” she tells PEOPLE. “I had gotten in trouble one day when I was little for punching my brother, and my dad said when we get home I was going to get a spanking. I ran, and put on my denim dress so I wouldn’t feel it and it actually worked! I didn’t feel a thing so I had to fake cry. I started acting at a young age.”

She’s since become a connoisseur of denim for reasons other than its protective capabilities, saying that at the moment, “My idea of perfect denim is comfortable, but fitting. I love high-waisted, wide-legged, and skinny jeans. I wear it all. I can’t lie, I’m a denim freak!” And her secret to the perfect fit? “The way I stretch my jeans is kind of unique, I guess. I lay out which pair I am going to wear the next day and stuff them with a pillow so they stretch. I don’t know if it actually works, but I have always done it.”

She says she turns to Pinterest for inspiration when it comes to mixing up her denim styling, but that her boyfriend comes by his style naturally (much to her family’s amusement). “I love the way he dresses,” she says. “He wears joggers a lot, and a nice shirt buttoned all the way up to the top. The men in my family give him a hard time, but I love it.”

These days, Robertson loves Wild Blue because “their message is to encourage every girl to feel confident in who they are, and that’s a large part of my message that I share: to live original, meaning to be confident in the person you are created to be,” and adds that she was very tempted to make off with the high-waisted pair she modeled in the campaign. But first, she might have to make room in her denim drawer; she’s still got a pair from middle school she can’t bear to part with.

“I got a pair of True Religion jeans for Christmas in the 8th grade that I had begged my mom for,” she confides. “I don’t think I will ever have the heart to throw them away, because I wanted them so badly!” (Don’t worry, Sadie — we’re still holding on to that Jock Jams CD we threw a tantrum for outside the Tower Records in 1999.)
