Even Barely Famous Stars Erin and Sara Foster Have to Steal From Their Sisters’ Closets

Erin and Sara Foster poke fun at themselves and their “celebutant” status in the tongue-in-cheek VH1 faux reality series Barely Famous. But when it comes to their fashion (and stealing from the other’s closets) the two sisters (and daughters of Grammy-winning composer David Foster) are totally serious, as we found out when they took over the Clinique counter at Nordstrom’s at The Grove in L.A.

Erin, left, whose style is “tomboy feminine” according to her sister, and Sara, right, whose style is “sporty dumpy” according to herself, both admit that their style on the show is a heightened version of what they wear in real life. “You see me [on the show] in stiletto boots and short dresses. I personally never wear dresses,” Sara says. And Erin advocates for the perks of an on-set makeup artist for body touch-ups: “I’m a little riskier [on the show] — I show my legs a little more. If I had [a body makeup artist] in real life, I’d wear shorts all the time.”

But despite the glammed-up factor, the wardrobe process for the first season was anything but. “We didn’t have a big wardrobe budget, so [our stylist friend] went through our closets and helped us put outfits together, then took stuff from her own closet and then helped us shop a little bit,” says Erin. “She sort of helped curate the process of how to put our outfits together.” Adds Sara: “Hopefully season 2 will be a much different process.”

Are there trends that they (or their on-screen alter egos) are dying to adopt? “I don’t do it and I make fun of people for doing it. But secretly I’m just jealous because it looks really cool — but I’ve talked so much crap about it that now I can’t do it — is socks,” Sara says. ” Girls are now wearing socks in heels, socks in boots, like a thin sock, where you’re seeing the sock.” Erin’s just grateful that the days of tube tops and low-cut jeans are past. “I feel like trends have matured. It’s not trashy or cheesy anymore,” she says.

But just in case old trends come back into style, Erin and Sara had plenty of options to choose from in their own closets, having saved some major fashion pieces that may make a resurgence. For Erin, it’s a fashion staple: a plaid shirt from J. Crew that she’s “been wearing for like 12 years.” As for Sara’s oldest item? “I have old Miu Miu platforms from high school that I am so afraid to relinquish because I’m like they’re gonna come back!”

So when they aren’t sharing their beauty wisdom with the Clinique customers at an L.A. shopping center (perks to growing up in L.A.: “I remember [my mom] coming in and being like, Alright girls, you’re going to age one day so let’s start. We’re like, what?!” Sara jokes) what are they doing? Stealing from each other’s closets, of course. We’ll leave you with this oh-so-Fosters exchange:

SF: You’ve stolen a lot of my J. Crew cashmere sweaters. And cardigans.
EF: I steal her sweaters and her leather jacket I stole.
SF: Oh, my IRO leather jacket. There’s not … what have I taken from her?
EF: You literally don’t want anything.
SF: Like maybe a pair of Free City sweatpants. We have very different — she got a cape from Nasty Gal and I was like oh yeah it’s fine and then I went and bought it the next day.
EF: She doesn’t borrow my stuff, she just goes and buys it for herself.
SF: So I didn’t steal the actual one of hers but I just stole the idea and then I went and copied it.
