Three letters you’re sure to hear or say over the next few months are “SPF.” Sun protection is always a hot topic, especially as consumers share their candid experiences with skin illnesses on social media. Although it’s always important to wear sunscreen with and without makeup, reports say it may not be as vigilant as you think.

According to Consumer Reports, approximately one third of waterproof sunscreens fail to do what they advertise. Using 34 different lotions and sprays as testers, magazine reviewers took a dip for the amount of time each product promised to guard the skin. By the end of the experiment, 11 of those products fell short by as much as 70 percent.

Although the FDA has challenged the findings since they weren’t recognized by scientists (per Elle), it should also be noted that most of us don’t even apply the required amount to begin with. It seems vanity plays a huge part in how much we lather on, as some beauty products just don’t blend with sunscreen the way we’d like to.

Unfortunately, your makeup may be just as harmful, too.

If you’re a fan of discounted designer products, the chances of it containing toxic chemicals are high. And I’m not talking ingredients that you can hardly pronounce; rat droppings, mercury and arsenic are some of the most common finds.

Earlier this week, the City Of London Police launched a campaign, urging women to stay away from counterfeit goods on the Internet. Of the 5,500 websites they’ve suspended over the last 18 months, the majority of them were declared hazardous after careful laboratory testing.

While fake cosmetics such as eyeliner, mascara, lip gloss and foundation have been found to contain toxic levels of chemicals and harmful substances such as; arsenic, mercury and lead. All of these can cause allergic reactions, such as skin irritation, swelling, rashes and burns as well as leaving the consumer with longer term health problems. Counterfeit make-up is often produced in un-sanitised and un-hygienic factories and there have been cases where rats’ droppings and poison have also been found in the phoney cosmetics.

Ladies, sometimes spending that extra couple of dollars is bad for the bank account, but good for your health.

If you’re using eco-friendly beauty products, tell us some of your faves in the comments below!
