Fashion Is Having Another Fur Moment, But How Much Is Too Much?

Karl Lagerfeld once said, “In a meat-eating world, wearing leather for shoes and even clothes, the discussion of fur is childish.” Obviously, some beg to differ. And in light of the recent Fall 2014 shows in New York, London, Milan and Paris, all of which showed that this enduring trend is once again having a spotlight moment, animal rights activists are raising their voices in protest once more.

What’s trending on the catwalks aside, The Guardian reports that the biggest furs sale ever to to take place in the industry will happen this month in Helsinki. The numbers are honestly a bit shocking. Fashion designers and fur dealers alike will go to market for “11 million mink pelts, two million fox and one million assorted wild animal furs.” Such a large sale indicates an even heavier emphasis on furs in seasons to come. But how much is too much?

When you take into consideration information from the likes of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)–that the animals are often skinned alive, horribly mistreated, etc.–it’s not hard to see where the frustration and the sadness come from. It’s also not hard to see why they would choose to direct those feelings toward the fashion industry, where the use of furs by designers such as Fendi and Prada may seem frivolous and indulgent.

But not all designers and clothing companies are at the “bad” end of the spectrum. Stella McCartney, H&M, Zara, and Topshop have all pledged to not use real fur in their collections. But then again, these brands are extremely popular in younger fashionistas, the group that’s said to be spearheading this fur renaissance, according to the International Fur Trade Federation’s Mark Oaten. New design technologies have made fur cool again, and the young masses are bundling up.

PETA is having a hard time dealing with fur’s re-found popularity, but is still working toward a universal ban. Some celebrities are on board with the mission, such as Khloe Kardashian. She actually posed for PETA back in 2008 but formally severed ties with the organization after they attacked her sister Kim. Just this month though, she was spotted out in an anti-fur faux fur jacket with the words “F**K Yo Fur” on the back, which might mean she’s back to being serious about campaigning against the use of fur.
