Have We Reached Peak Duck Face? Kim Kardashian West Has Been Trying Out New Facial Expressions

Today in things we never thought we’d say: Kim Kardashian West, author of the New York Times best-selling coffee table book, Kim Kardashian West: Selfish, has been slowly straying from her signature selfie pose (a.k.a. the duck face) over the past two months. And to be honest, we’re not quite sure what to make of it.

We first noticed her change in expression around eight weeks ago — not long after her pregnancy announcement — starting with this shot of her and husband, Kanye West, heading to his surprise birthday party. Noticeably missing? Her pout. Surprising addition? Her tongue.

Then a month later, she snapped a nearly identical shot during the pair’s trip to Glastonbury. (Unlike wellies, it’s a look we definitely didn’t see coming.)

At first we thought maybe West had given himself a title bump from being Kim’s personal stylist and photo shoot coordinator to becoming her new art director of selfies. Then we realized her various faces had taken on new life outside of the shots with West. So, while we work on getting to the bottom of this great life mystery, here are a few theories we’d like to offer up:

• Now that Kylie is 18, Kim is passing the sexy pout torch on to her little sister. Not unheard of, considering we know she’s shared tons of beauty advice with her younger sibs.

• Following the success of her first foray into the publishing world, she’s working on a sequel to Selfish, but she needs pictures that highlight how she’s evolved the “selfie movement” since her trailblazing book’s debut.

• For fear of actually breaking the Internet by causing a worldwide “Who’s the real Kim?” debate, she’s practicing a new look for when she takes a selfie with her selfie-taking wax figure.

• Mason has been giving her lessons on the finer art of self-photography.

Then again, Kim did just post this, so our girl hasn’t changed too much. She’ll always find a way to bring back the pout — even if it is just an afterthought in her photos.
