Here’s Your Labor Day Weekend Beauty Inspiration, Courtesy of Minka Kelly

It’s the final weekend of summer, which means you probably have some fun plans lined up. Great, because we have the the perfect beauty look to try out, thanks to the gorgeous Minka Kelly, plus the exclusive how-to straight from her makeup artist, Jenn Streicher. Major makeup inspo awaits, below!

For the A List’s anniversary bash in Beverly Hills, California, the actress stole the show wearing a bright red-orange lipstick paired with her just-back-from-the-beach bronze. As it turns out, the bold hue was actually Kelly’s idea.

“It was funny, [Minka] saw me and I was wearing the lipstick that I put on her, and she said I want to wear that color,” she tells PEOPLE. “It’s definitely very orange-red, probably more orange than red. She has the most beautiful skin — it’s like that golden, olivey color — and it was just like the perfect combination for that lipstick.”

The hot color is Smashbox’s Be Legendary Lipstick in Fireball Matte, which created a creamy matte finish on the star’s pout.

Surprisingly, though, this was the first time Kelly has ever worn a red lip color, according to Streicher. “Isn’t that crazy? Minka was very hesitant about wearing it, but because it looks so good on her, I was like, ‘You should be wearing red lipstick!’ I had to talk her into it like three times.”

If you’re afraid of sporting a stain as bold as Kelly’s, Streicher says to take a step back and accept that you’re going to look a little different — at least at first.

“The biggest thing to overcome is the way that you look at yourself,” she tells PEOPLE. “You’re so used to seeing yourself one way that if you make a change that you thinks looks so different, to anybody else it will just look great.”

Streicher also recommends keeping the rest of your makeup look as natural as possible, letting the lip steal the show.

“It’s easier to wear a pop of color like that if all your other makeup is really minimal, so you don’t look like you’re wearing a ton of makeup — to make it look the freshest,” she says. “I think women tend to feel like they look like they’re wearing a lot of makeup when they put the bright lipstick on, but if you kind of keep everything else toned down a bit, it’ll look really good.”

To complement the bright lip, Streicher lightly highlighted right above Minka’s cheekbones and under her eyes with Charlotte Tilbury’s Film Star Bronze & Glow to accentuate the star’s sun-kissed summer glow.

“You really have to be careful with [the highlighter] because you don’t want to overdo it,” she says. “You just want to be able to see a little, subtle shine when you get it in a certain light.”
