High School Covers Up Bathroom Mirrors To Send A #BodyPosi Message

bathroom-mirror-ban Photo: FacebookSeniors covered up the bathroom mirrors in their high school bathrooms to make younger students feel better about themselves, but they may have missed the point.

The mirrors at Trinity Academy, a Christian school in Kansas, were recently replaced with brown paper covered with body positive slogans, in an attempt to spread self-love through the campus. The #BanMirrors movement was an attempt to show young girls at the school to love what is on the inside, more than the outside.

“We were trying to think of ideas of how we could serve the underclassmen and make the most impact,” one of the girls behind the project told local CBS station KWCH. “Especially as freshmen and sophomores, you’re trying to find your identity and who you are, and we want them to find their identity in God and in Christ and not in a mirror and not what their outward appearance looks like.”

However, we seriously think the movement misses the point. You don’t learn to love your reflection by covering it up. You learn to love yourself by looking in the mirror and loving what is looking back at you. Covering mirrors does nothing but prevent you from noticing the piece of lunch you have stuck between your teeth.

As one source wrote to Jezebel, “I get that it’s trying to be positive about the girls… but it feels to me like they’re papering over the mirror because they can’t go all out and ask the girls to wear paper bags themselves. Believe me, I grew up in this culture, and being told ‘your beauty should not come from outward adornment!!!’ just sounds like MORE exhausting shaming and policing… Leaving that culture has given me significant mental health gains.”

While the intention was good, the delivery was not the best. Instead of covering the mirrors with brown paper, maybe just writing mantras over the mirror, so your reflection would be covered with positive affirmations, would have been better.

At the end of the day, we applaud these seniors for taking on a serious issue for young girls, especially in this day and age of selfies and Instagram likes, but next time, stick with hugs.
