How We Feel About ModCloth Retiring Its Plus Size Section

Online clothing store Modcloth, just made a major move towards achieving a more inclusive fashion industry. Earlier this week, the vintage-inspired retailer announced its decision to retire its plus size section – which, if you’re a curvy maven, probably caught you somewhat off guard. But trust us, it’s not what it seems.

The website has decided to drop its labels, choosing instead to sell both straight and plus size items under the same categories. So now instead of searching for the “plus size” tab on the site, there will be an option to refine separates via an “extended sizes” category on the sidebar. Pretty amazing, right?

According to the press release, the decision to remove its plus-size section came after the site conducted a survey with its customers, aged 18-35, about their relationship with the word “plus.” Results showed two-thirds of women were “embarrassed by having to go to a separate section of the digital store to find plus,” while just a little over half “no longer wanted to be labeled plus” at all. And to be quite honest, it makes perfect sense – after all, who wants to feel pegged to a label, or feel ‘othered’ when shopping both online or in-store for that matter?!

As far as terminology goes, there’s still major debate over the word choice, with many bloggers feeling that ‘extended’ implies “beyond the normal” range of sizes. But with Modcloth’s history of pioneering the body-positive movement, we’re sure this is the first step of many toward a more size-inclusive shopping experience – and we have no problem shopping to that!

Check out some picks we can’t wait to snag on the pages ahead.
