Isabel Marant Doesn’t Really Wear Her Wedge Sneakers Anymore, Do You?

Since their explosive debut in 2012, the Isabel Marant Wedge Sneakers have won over the hearts and soles (pun intended) of everyone from fashion bloggers to the brands who decided to knock them off. It’s almost to the point where it’s too much of a good thing–you can’t walk down the streets of NYC without seeing repeat appearances of the style–at least that’s what Isabel Marant herself thinks.

The French designer spoke with Footwear News about what’s next for her in terms of shoes, and touched upon the seemingly sore topic of her wedge sneakers. She mentioned that she doesn’t wear the shoe style as much as she used to because she sees so many bad copies on the streets.

Initially she designed the style with the thought in mind that height brings more confidence. She told FN, “I worked to achieve a balanced look, which is not easy with [the sneaker wedge]. I worked on [the design] for more than nine months before launching, and when it was finished I looked at it and said, ‘Oh, that’s going to be a hit for sure.’ But I wouldn’t have thought [the style would still be in demand today]. They still have something special, even though there are a lot of copies, and the bad copies are super-ugly. People want [the original]. I’m still selling a lot.” It’s interesting that Marant sounds almost defensive of the style, but perhaps we should be more forgiving of such an attitude when her product has completely taken on a life of its own.

Though she may be pretty much done with her wedge sneaker, Isabel Marant isn’t throwing out all thoughts of sneakers in general; she included a stylish-looking flat sneaker in her pre-fall 2014 collection.

StyleBlazers, are you completely over the wedge sneaker trend?
