Julianne Hough’s DWTS Photo Diary: Week 10 Went from the Judge’s Table to the Dance Floor

In this week’s installment of her exclusive behind-the-scenes photo diary for PEOPLE, DWTS judge Julianne Hough had a very special surprise in store: She (and the other judges) would be dancing with one of the contestants (in her case, Riker Lynch). So her stylists worked to create a look that would work perfectly from the judge’s table to the dance floor — winding up with this sleek, sexy red number. Read on for more from hairstylist Riawna Capri, makeup artist Spencer Barnes and stylist Anita Patrickson for all the scoop.

“The inspiration was finding something sexy and that fit with the theme of Argentine tango!” Patrickson tells PEOPLE. “Jules hasn’t done a red-hot moment, so this was it. This gorgeous Lorena Sarbu dress with a sky-high slit was the perfect match.” And her client was a fan on sight: “Jules loved it. The color is so dramatic.”

Capri had to take Hough’s tango into consideration as well. “Because Jules was performing, we needed to do a style that wouldn’t mess up during her dance,” she said. “So we did a deep side part, slick braided bun, then secured it super tightly so nothing budged. It went perfectly with the red dress, and her look was all about the stunning makeup, which made her eyes pop!”

And despite the perfect appearances, nothing came easily this week. “Tonight’s look was a fun challenge because we were faced with limited time and then had more of it taken away due to added meetings and rehearsals,” Barnes says. “Such is finals week!”

So how did he get that picture-perfect red lipstick Capri and Patrickson each raved about? Again, with a few bumps along the way. “Originally, Riawna and I had completed a look that was totally different than what we ended up with,” he dishes. “After seeing rehearsal, we discovered that the look we had created was too similar to some of the troupe dancers — so we completely revised it.”

He gave her a bronzed glow with LORAC’s Tantalizer bronzer, then finished with a smoky eye and red lip to work with both her red column and lacy black performance dress. “I have not done a smoky eye as dark as tonight’s and rarely pair a red lip with a strong eye, but with the sleek hair and the red dress, it really worked well,” he says. “Julianne’s tango number gave rise to the look as well … this look proved versatile as judge and dancer.”
