Kristen Stewart Will Play Coco Chanel in a Karl Lagerfeld–Directed Short Film

Kristen Stewart has been a Chanel muse for some time. Now she’s expanding on that role by stepping into the heels of Coco Chanel herself (so to speak).

Stewart will star in a short film directed by Karl Lagerfeld, the creative director of Chanel, playing a young version of Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel in a fictionalized biopic of the designer. Also starring in the biopic is Geraldine Chaplin, who will portray Chanel in middle age, as well as Harper’s Bazaar editor Laura Brown, who will play an American journalist (go figure).

Lagerfeld, who tapped his latest muse for the role after seeing her performance in this year’s Still Alice, said Stewart made the role her own — which he absolutely loved.

“She played it really, really mean,” he told WWD. “You only see her in tests and she’s complaining about everything. She’s mean with the director, mean with the producer.”

Stewart, who’s worked with the “incredibly enriching” designer for years in her Chanel campaign ads, previously told PEOPLE working with the fashion legend is a lot less intimidating than one might think.

“Really, his image is in contrast to what it’s really like to be around him,” she said. “There’s something almost unapproachable and f—ing chic … And then you meet him and he’s actually an incredibly creative and voracious liver.”

She added: “His personal library in Paris that we shot the campaign in, you look around and the staff is like, ‘Now, can you believe he’s actually read all of these books?’ and you’re like, ‘I kind of actually can.’ He’s an impressive guy. He definitely is so much more than the glasses and the hair than you might think he is.”

The short film will premiere at the fashion house’s next Métiers d’Arts show on Dec. 1 in Rome.
