Lena Dunham Takes Tokyo: The Star’s Surprising Style Revelations From Her Trip

Lena Dunham brought Girls to Tokyo — and then brought Tokyo to her wardrobe. In the week that she’s been filming her HBO series abroad, she’s adopted the city’s unique style and beauty culture almost instantly. Below, a guide to Dunham’s too-cool Tokyo attire.

Find your ideal mirror selfie location early. If you want everyone to know about your “giant baby fashion,” you’re going to need a good place to pose while wearing it.

Kawaii is key. Kawaii, which is Japanese for “cute,” is one of the most practical words to add to your vocabulary for a Tokyo trip — a lesson Lena clearly learned early on. But one woman’s kawaii is another woman’s stank face, as the star observes about the judgmental lady behind her.

Rihanna is universally inspiring. We’ll let Dunham’s caption speak for itself: “We’ve made some strong yet highly temporary choices here in #Tokyo (thanks for the septum ring support, Rihanna. The support you gave us in my brain.)”

Beauty is pain. If the spa tells you you’ve got to lay on rocks for beautiful skin, then by God, you’re going to lay on those rocks and pray nothing got lost in translation.

Keep an open mind, stylewise. So what if the ads for this Japanses plus-size label depict women as food? (See: the fro yo-styled woman in pink, above.) Dunham just thinks it’s cool that a brand whose name translates to “Chubby” can exist in a kawaii-conscious society.

You won’t see the platforms in the photobooth. Buy them anyway. You never know when an adorable photo op might come up outside of the curtain.

Identify your favorite places to shop. Dunham meets her style soulmates at “Baby Shoop.” (Is that where you buy the giant baby fashion?)

Enjoy the city’s varied reading material. Although “Celeb Outfit Book” looks pretty similar to another publication we’re awfully fond of …

Know your strengths. If your sock game is strong in N.Y.C., chances are it will be stronger in Tokyo. At least, where Lena is concerned.
