#LFW: Mary Katrantzou’s Dark Complexity For Fall 2014
After back-to-back successful collections, Mary Katrantzou presented her Fall 2014 collection that took a slightly different edge. The Greek designer kept her cultural identity in the geometric prints on the garments, but used a darker color palette for the 34-piece collection.
The initial pieces looked like the stained glass windows of a Catholic church, possibly influenced by the interior of Mykonos churches. Dark metal metallics added a contemporary, chic addition but were ultimately quelled by more graphic print dresses.
As Style.com notes, Katrantzou wanted to “flex her creativity, to work with laces, jacquards and brocades, rather than constantly being subject to the time-consuming tyranny of the prints that made her a star.” The designer also delved into flow, showing more micro pleat skirts than we’ve seen from her before.
The downside is that many of the pieces have a box silhouette, giving no justice to the female figure. Where cut was lacking, tone and texture made up.
We’d just like to see a better balance for Spring 2015.
