Facebook is following in the footsteps of Pinterest and Instagram, and is turning its social media platform into an e-commerce site.

According to Buzzfeed, Facebook is building shops within Facebook pages, which are currently still in a testing phase but will soon let a user go through the entire shopping process within Facebook.

“With the shop section on the page, we’re now providing businesses with the ability to showcase their products directly on the page,” said Facebook product marketing manager Emma Rodgers.

This is just the latest move Facebook is making into commerce. It recently launched a money transfer component to Messenger, and is working on virtual assistant on Messenger to help you research and buy products and services.

It makes sense that retailers would want to tap into alternative online mediums to reach consumers. It is reported that people spend 80% of their time online on mobile apps, and 13% of all time spent on mobile apps is spent on Facebook.

Facebook does not currently take a percentage of the sales, but only time will tell if the social media site will attempt to get a chunk of the e-commerce pie.
