If you think a bright lacquered lip sounds intimidating, Chloë Grace Moretz’s gorgeous look from The 5th Wave photo call in Mexico will make you reconsider. Read on for tips from the star’s makeup guru Mai Quynh, and get ready for the vibrant style to become your new summer go-to.

“I wanted a bright summer lip on Chloë to go with our Cancun vibe,” Quynh tells PEOPLE. “I picked a coral red lip, because I wanted a fun pop of color to go with the blue in her [Miu Miu] dress.”

While a red lip in the middle of the summer might seem heavy to some, Quynh says it’s the perfect shade to wear in the sun. The trick is to go for a hue that’s lighter and more coral-based — like the color Quynh used on Moretz — as opposed to a deep, dark red.

“Definitely look for a warmer red with a coral undertone, as it works better on golden summer skin,” she says. “Pairing it with a subtle bronzer and a peachy cheek will get you summer-ready.”

And as for that shiny, lacquered finish? Surprisingly, it’s not gloss! It’s a cream formula — which on healthy, moisturized lips, gives off a subtle sheen.
