Look of the Week: Kerry Washington at the Scandal ATAS event in L.A.

We’re constantly updating our Last Night’s Look gallery with all the best red-carpet moments (gorgeous dresses! dazzling accessories! sky-high heels!). Now, let’s talk beauty. Each Friday, we’ll be highlighting one of the most gorgeous makeup and/or hair moments, along with details on how to re-create the look — straight from the makeup artist or hairstylist — in our feature Look of the Week.

After seeing (and experiencing) all of the gorgeous, jaw-dropping looks from this past Monday’s Met Gala, we thought narrowing down a contender for today’s LOTW would be a feat in itself. But then Kerry Washington showed up — looking as beautiful as ever with a sultry blue smoky eye — to the Scandal ATAS event in L.A., and we knew right then and there that she’d be the perfect pick for the week. So we reached out to her go-to makeup pro, Carola Gonzalez, for all the deets on her enviable eye makeup, so you, too, can try out the look at home!

LOS ANGELES, CA - MAY 01: Actress Kerry WashingtoJason LaVeris/FilmMagic

Inspired by the Scandal actress’s brushstroke-floral Timo Weiland sheath, Gonzalez wanted an eye shadow hue that complemented her colorful graphic dress, which is why she opted for Neutrogena’s Nourishing Long Wear Eye Shadow + Built-In Primer Quad in Smoky Steel (the actress is the face of the brand!) to get the job done.

To create the smoky, shimmery eye, Gonzalez started with shade No. 4, a super-dark navy shade from the palette. “I only applied eye shadow on her eyelid and blended it under her crease,” she tells PEOPLE.

But even with the right eye shadow shades, the key to nailing the look at home depends on the tools you’re using — specifically, the eye shadow brush, Gonzalez says. “If you use a brush that has soft bristles, like the one I used (MAC’s No. 217 Blending Brush), it’s not going to pick up the pigment of the eye shadow as much as it would with a defining brush, or a brush that has harder bristles,” she tells PEOPLE. “When you work with a dark eye shadow and you use a brush like [hers], it’s going to make the eye shadow go softer.”

To complete the sultry eye look, Gonzalez lined the actress’s lower outer corner of her eye with Neutrogena’s Nourishing Eyeliner in Cosmic Black and then lined the inner rim of her eyes with a blue-hued liner (Neutrogena’s Nourishing Eyeliner in Twilight Blue) because the black would be “too deep” on its own. “I wanted to create a softer look, so I went with a blue,” she says. “I mixed both eyeliners because it always seems, at the end of the day, how much intensity you want to give the eye.”

Which is why the makeup pro kept the star’s lip color a natural hue (Neutrogena’s MoistureShine Gloss in Healthy Blush), keeping the focus on the eye. The soft pink is “very pretty for anybody that has Kerry’s skin tone,” Gonzalez says.

And she completed the look with a radiant finish, which was perfected with one simple product. “[Washington’s] glow actually comes from the blush, which is the Neutrogena Healthy Skin Custom Glow Brush and Bronzer,” she says. “The blush makes the skin glow because of the properties that it has, plus it has a little bit of shimmer.”

Sparkle, Gonzalez says, is key for a super-summery, beautiful and bronzed look. “For those girls out there that want to look radiant and glowy, I advise that they use either bronzers or blushes that already have shimmer in them, because that’s going to add some glow to their makeup,” she says.
