Look of the Week: Rachel McAdams at a Screening of Aloha in West Hollywood

We’re constantly updating our Last Night’s Look gallery with all the best red-carpet moments (gorgeous dresses! dazzling accessories! sky-high heels!). Now, let’s talk beauty. Each Friday, we’ll be highlighting one of the most gorgeous makeup and/or hair moments, along with details on how to re-create the look — straight from the makeup artist or hairstylist — in our feature Look of the Week.

We haven’t seen Rachel McAdams on the red carpet in a while (probably because she’s busy filming True Detective and serving as maid of honor in her sister’s wedding), but her most recent appearance has certainly made up for lost time. McAdams was radiant at a special screening of her new film, Aloha, in West Hollywood, California, on Wednesday night, and with a look as gorgeous as hers, we knew there was no way she wouldn’t be this week’s LOTW. So we tapped McAdam’s beauty guru (who also happens to be the aforementioned little sister!), Kayleen McAdams, for all the details on the actress’s pretty pink lip and sweet rosy cheeks!

To complement Rachel’s ensemble (a green-and-blue Self-Portrait dress, with mesh detailing and a draped midi skirt with a knee-high split), Kayleen went with a bright and fresh-faced makeup look.

For Rachel’s shimmery, rosy cheeks, Kayleen relied on two hero products: cream blush (Charlotte Tilbury’s Filmstars On the Go Palette) and illuminator (CK One Color Skin Illuminator in Warm). The makeup pro added a light drop of the illuminator to Rachel’s foundation (Tarte Clay 12-Hour Full Coverage Foundation SPF 15) since “a little bit goes a long way,” to give the skin a bit of a glow, rather than an oily complexion. And to give Rachel’s cheeks a light flush, Kayleen applied the cream blush with a duo-fibre brush and then blended it with a BeautyBlender sponge.

This summer, it’s all about the poppy, bright-pink lip, which is exactly why Kayleen opted for a pretty lacquer-like shade made up of two hues — both a lipstick and a lip gloss.

“I’ve been carrying around this lilac glossy stain in my kit, waiting for the perfect person who could pull it off,” Kayleen says. “The teal and navy blue shades in the dress were very cool, so I used a cool shade of pink lipstick as a stain on the lip to stay with those cool undertones. I then topped that lip with the lilac stain to give it dimension.”

So how did she get the lip look? Simple: By pressing CK One Pure Color Lipstick in Kiss It (with her fingers!) into Rachel’s lips and then having the actress blot off excess color to create a stain-like appearance. Kayleen then topped the lip stain with a swipe of the purply Yves Saint Laurent Glossy Stain in No. 30.

For readers who’d love to try the dual-lip combo at home, it’s a great trick to making color throughout the day, Kayleen says.

“For someone like Rachel who has wore every shade of lip under the sun, I like to mix products and find new fun color combos,” she says. “Mixing textures like a lipstick and a gloss together make for a more interesting lip and give it staying power.”
