Melissa McCarthy on Plus-Size Shopping: It’s Hard When You Can’t Find Clothes Because ‘Your Store Is Upstairs Hidden by the Tire Section’

At a time when it seems like every celebrity is launching a clothing line, Melissa McCarthy has managed to set hers apart from the pack with some commonsense style advice (and head-turning appearances like these). And now she’s opening up more about what to expect from her designs (as well as what inspired her to create them) in the cover story of June’s More magazine.

“It’s pretty consuming,” she says about the design process, which includes incorporating doodles from her kids into the finished product. “My problem is, I don’t hand things off very well. I just figure if it has my name on it and I want to make people feel good about wearing it, I can’t pass it off.”

But it’s worth it to her — after all, this idea has been a long time in the making, and it was inspired by her own disappointing shopping experiences, as she’s talked about before. “People don’t stop at size 12. I feel like there’s a big thing missing where you can’t dress to your mood above a certain number,” she says. “[Malls] segregate plus-size. It’s an odd thing that you can’t go shopping with your friends because your store is upstairs hidden by the tire section: ‘We’ll put you gals over there because we don’t want to see you and you probably don’t want to be seen.’ ”

At last check-in, McCarthy’s line was set to debut in August and top out at $159; her More profile adds that it will contain 80 pieces from sizes 4 to 28. And while she’s determined to work hard at it (“I want women to realize you don’t have to work for the company. You can run the company. I want the scope for them to be endless”), she’s also determined not to be so hard on herself. “I have caught my reflection and thought, Oof. That girl is struggling. That girl is tired. I’ve had mornings where I’m like, Oh God, I have weird hair. I look like Fraggle Rock,” she says. “[But] who cares if my eyes are puffy because I ate 44 almonds last night? Or my legs are short? To my core, I don’t care … I’ve let go of that quest for perfection.”

The actress has been spotted out in lots of great looks while promoting her movie Spy, including this swirled cream tunic and distressed leather-look leggings, plus a pair of sexy, strappy heels.
