#MFW: It’s All Groovy And Gender Bending At Gucci

The fashion world all watched to see what would come of Gucci’s first runway show after the unexpected, early departure of Frida Giannini. Reported by the New York Times, every single detail from the menswear show Giannini had planned to show were changed— and in under a week. Under the direction of Gucci’s head accessories designer Alessandro Michele, and rumored to take Giannini’s place as creative director, the design team whipped up a collection that looked far from a last minute thing. Staying true to the jet-setting Gucci man, Michele sticks to music subculture for inspiration. Part beatnik, part mod musician, this season borrows gender-bending tendencies from J.W. Anderson in a vintage manner— with some looks modeled by women themselves. Ruffle-trim sleeves, silk blouses, and lace complement roomy trousers, shrunken sweaters, and a ’70s flair.

It’s hard to believe that the cohesive collection was achieved in a matter of days. The refreshed, edgier direction is a step in the right direction for the established fashion house. What we have seen Michele can achieve in less than a week sets a promising standard for where he can bring Gucci in coming seasons.
