Karl Lagerfeld famously once said that the only person he’d allow to take over at Chanel was Jeremy Scott. Scott hasn’t taken over Chanel yet, but he did just make his debut as the new creative director of Moschino at Milan Fashion Week. And to many, the teaming up of two power houses widely loved for their use of iconography and branding was a match made in designer heaven.

The line is an subversive look at pop culture icons, tackling them head on and adding a large dose of the absurd. Chanel suits, arguably the epitome of chic, are weighed down in gold jewelry and given leather accents, reminiscent of the accessories a stereotypical 90s woman of the night (the antithesis of chic) might wear. Further devolving the idea of Chanel, Scott gave iconic Chanel items–the suit jacket, the skirt suit, the quilted purses–a McDonalds-flavored treatment complete with a yellow and gold makeover. Even the classic Golden Arches morphed into a Moschino “M.”

The junk food and pop culture focus didn’t end with McDonalds; Hersheys, Frito Lay, and Budweiser, each became design inspiration, as well. As did, randomly, Sponge Bob Squarepants.

At first glance, it’s quite a funny collection–which is just what Scott intended. He told W magazine, “You don’t always find that one person who can fit the house DNA seamlessly and also bring something new. One thing I have that the majority of other designers don’t is humor. That’s distinctly my approach, and it was distinctly Franco Moschino’s, too.”

It’s an approach that garners a lot of fans–both in terms of people who dress up loudly as a matter of course–celebs like Rihanna, Katy Perry, Rita Ora, and Lady Gaga are all fans of Jeremy Scott–come to mind, and for those who just want an extra dose of fun. If you’re the later, you can head to Moschino’s website right now to shop the runway capsule collection, which features mostly the McDonalds-turned-Moschino flavored pieces.
