#MFW Runway Recap Day 4: Timeless Classics Go Modern

It’s one thing to present timeless classics down a runway; but it’s another to incorporate them with a modern twist for fashion’s millennial generation.

At day four of Milan Fashion Week, we have Ermanno Scervino, Gabriele Colangelo and Jil Sander all inspired by season-spanning separates – but this time around, they were infused with modern accents. Ermanno Scervino presented pieces that could easily been passed down through the generations. Crop tops and midi skirts were cast in delicate lace while layered chiffon gowns resembled the definition of elegance — to say the least. Not to mention, the intricate resort-inspired prints were a clear sign that the Tuscan designer is more in tune with fashion’s youthful eye.

Jil Sander on the other hand, played on the classic minimalist as models were draped in satin and silk. Cutout were a major theme throughout the runway, with slash openings featured at the shoulders of jackets, throughout lengthening shifts or simply to break apart skirts. Timeless separates like buttoned blazers and shirtdresses were updated with belted accents and structural sleeves that gave an of-the-moment architectural edge.

For Gabriele Colangelo, the collection seemed to reference ‘90s minimalism with an embellished update. Throughout a number of looks there were asymmetric openings, a bonded technique which appeared more like brushstrokes and shaggy, fur-like accents that was applied to jacket sleeves, trims and even coveted bucket bag silhouettes.
