Stefano Pilati has settled in quite nicely with the ERmenegildo Zegna brand. After a few years spent uncomfortably at Yves Saint Laurent, the designer seems quite at home having settled into a brand that’s considerably less buzzy. But as he’s hit his sweet spot, he’s brought quite a bit of buzz.

At Zegna, Pilati places much of his focus on fabrication. Last season, buzz came from an awe inspiring set that spake to the designer’s focus on nature and sustainability in textiles. This season that set was replaced by a stark white one, with the theatrics pared back. For the clothing things started similarly pared back, in all black. The suits came roomy slouched, evoking a sort of pajama feel. As the palette transitioned into grey and a few madras prints, trousers came down with cinch tie waistbands while coats draped low and wrapped around the waist. Structure came with 50s inspirations with boxy car coats. And finally, Pilati closed out with the most beautiful procession of white looks that got Milan Fashion Week off to the perfect start.
