Mindy Kaling Hasn’t Reached the ‘Throwing Hairbrushes’ Levels of Diva Yet

If you’re still mourning the fact that The Mindy Project was canceled this week, we’re here to help with the grieving process. For one, it might not really be over (she posted a cryptic photo that’s giving fans hope), and second, you can get your Mindy Kaling fix from her in-depth interview (not to mention the incredibly stunning photos) with InStyle. The magazine’s June cover star opens up about relationship with B.J. Novak, her style hive mind and what causes her to have those “diva moments.”

Right off the bat: “My diva moments are more tied to panicky worry,” Kaling, 35, says. “[My assistant] will have prepared everything for a day and then that morning, I wake up and I’m like, ‘I don’t want to do any of that; it has to be completely different.’ But I don’t throw hairbrushes at people or anything like that. I haven’t gotten there yet.”

She has gotten to the level that we obsess over everything she wears — in real life and as Mindy Lahiri on TV. But despite learning a ton from her on-screen alter ego, in real life, she can give in to peer pressure. “I think I’m very susceptible [to other people’s style],” she says. “We’ll have someone like Laura Dern on the show, and I’ll see what she’s wearing, and I’m just like, ‘Okay, well, that’s obviously the way you should dress.’ Or I’ll meet some cool actress who only wears Helmut Lang and Vince, and I’m like ‘Ugh! That looks amazing and chic and everything coordinates with everything and I need to get, like, a ratty T-shirt.’ I love fashion and I love clothes.” (Do you think Allison Williams‘ look from Michael Kors’ fashion show in September inspired her to rock a piece of the designer’s spring collection on the mag’s cover?)

And for those holding out hope that she and ex (both in real life and on The Office) Novak will reconcile, well, Kaling is stoking the fire. “I will freely admit: My relationship with B.J. Novak is weird as hell,” she says. “He is not my boyfriend, but he is not my best friend. I guess you could describe our relationship as a ‘romantically charged camaraderie with loud arguments,’ but I don’t think Facebook would accept this as a new status.”
