Mother Sketches Her Stylish Daughter’s Outfits

Jenny Williams has documented all her daughters’ outfits on a blog titled, “What My Daughter Wore,” by drawing her fun and creative outfits.

Williams, a New York-based artist sketches her daughter Clementine’s outfits, along with her two sons and some of her daughters friends, on her blog which has been transformed into a book.

The sketches are fun, and highlight her 12-year-old daughter’s fun and creative style.

In an interview with The Cut, Williams discussed why she decided to start drawing her daughter, and what her style was like as a child.

“I think that she’s very creative and very unique,” she said. “She never took much input from me — I dressed her for the first year or so, but ever since she was about 1 1/2, she’s had her own ideas about how to dress.”

Among the drawings on her blog is a sketch of her daughter wearing a leather jacket, lace shirt and a bowler hat from her mom’s “Clockwork Orange” Halloween costume and her daughter wearing a beanie that says, “Bossy.”

So how does Williams decide what to draw?

“It’s totally just based on my reaction to what they’re wearing and how they look,” she said. “On the surface level, the project is about making drawings of interesting outfits that kids are wearing. There’s a more emotional tide to it for me that it’s also recording the passage of time of my own daughter and the kids that I draw on a regular basis. It’s got a time-capsule element to it.”

Williams went on to describe her teenage style as that of a “Victorian orphan.”

“Yeah. When I was in middle school, I was definitely an outsider and an eccentric,” she said. “My best friend and I dressed like two Victorian orphans. It was definitely a way of setting myself apart from everyone else.”
